O's postseason issues persist as season abruptly ends

BALTIMORE -- The reasons to believe the 2024 Orioles -- despite all of their injuries, their second-half struggles and their inconsistency -- could make a deep postseason run were aplenty.

They were “battle tested,” as various players repeatedly stated in recent weeks. Their young stars now had October experience. Nobody wanted to again feel the pain they felt in 2023, when Baltimore surprisingly got swept out of the American League Division Series by Texas.

The pain returned Wednesday night at Camden Yards.

For the second year in a row, the Orioles were knocked out of the postseason without recording a win. They fell, 2-1, in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Royals, who notched a 1-0 victory in Tuesday’s Game 1 as they took the best-of-three set.

Baltimore’s lone run in the series came via Cedric Mullins’ game-tying leadoff homer in the fifth on Wednesday. That quickly got overshadowed, as the Orioles then loaded the bases with no outs in the inning and failed to plate any runs.

Kansas City scored the go-ahead run on Bobby Witt Jr.’s two-out RBI infield single in the sixth.

The O’s have still not won a postseason game since sweeping the Tigers in three games in the 2014 ALDS. Their 10-game playoff losing streak is tied for fourth longest in AL/NL history.

Longest postseason losing streaks in AL/NL history
1. 2004-20 Twins -- 18
2. 1986-95 Red Sox -- 13
3. 1915-76 Phillies -- 11
T-4. 1958-91 Braves -- 10
T-4. 1980-85 Royals -- 10
T-4. 2014-24 Orioles -- 10

Over the past two years, the O’s have won 192 regular-season games, yet they’ve gone 0-5 in postseason play during that span.

There had been only two previous instances of a team winning 192-plus regular-season games, making the postseason twice and then winning zero playoff games:

• Over 2018 and ‘19, the A’s won 194 regular-season games, then twice lost in the winner-take-all AL Wild Card Game -- to the Yankees in ‘18 and the Rays in ‘19.

• Over 1969 and ‘70, the Twins won 195 regular-season games, then twice got swept in the AL Championship Series -- by the Orioles both years.
