The Orioles bolstered their infield depth Friday by acquiring infielder Engelb Vielma from the Giants in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations, the club announced.
Vielma, 23, spent the past six seasons in the Twins' organization, playing 543 games in the Minors. He was designated for assignment and claimed by the Giants in September. He's since been claimed and designated for assignment by the Phillies, Pirates and Giants.
Vielma split 2017 between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester, batting .229/.273/.280 with 17 doubles and 35 RBIs in 121 games. Known more for his defensive skills than his bat, Vielma could serve as a utility infielder with the O's in 2018. He's primarily played shortstop in the Minors, but has also logged time at second and third.
