Henderson takes over Minors' RBI lead
With less than 50 professional games under his belt, Gunnar Henderson understands his journey as a ballplayer is just beginning, and that means accepting and dealing with the struggles to come. But that's a problem for another day.
MLB's No. 97 overall prospect homered, doubled and drove in five runs for the second time in three games to lead Low-A Delmarva past visiting Lynchburg, 12-7. Henderson has four multi-hit performances in his last six games and has collected 14 RBIs in that span, giving him a Minor League-best 30.
"First off, hats off to my teammates for getting on base," Henderson said. "Without the guys in front of me doing their jobs, I wouldn't have the opportunity to drive in runs. So far this season, I've been able to focus on what pitchers are doing in certain situations and then putting a good swing on the ball in those key spots."
The fifth-ranked O's prospect has been a run-producing machine through through the first three weeks of the season. Henderson fell a triple shy of the cycle Wednesday night but drove in five runs for the third time this season, equaling a career high. The 19-year-old has collected at least one RBI in 11 of 17 games, including seven multi-RBI efforts.
Henderson laced his sixth double of the season in the opening inning before erupting for five RBIs across his last two plate appearances. The Montgomery, Ala., native singled home a pair of runners during Delmarva's eight-run sixth and blew the game open with a three-run homer an inning later, his sixth of the season.
"I've been trying to figure out the best approach to take in each situation," Henderson said. "With help from my teammates and coaches, I feel comfortable at the plate and with my ability to execute in all situations."
There have been very few instances where Henderson hasn't come up clutch in the early stages of the season. In addition to his RBI barrage, the 2019 second-round Draft pick has gone 10-for-25 with five extra-base hits, including three home runs, over his last six games. The hot streak has pushed Henderson's batting line to .338/.407/.676 in 71 at-bats. Despite striking out three times Tuesday, Henderson has not endured consecutive games without a hit and has reached safely in 15 of 17.
"I try to keep the same mindset every day," Henderson said. "It doesn't matter if I go 4-for-4 or 0-for-4. So far, I've been able to do that pretty well. I know I'll struggle but when you can limit them and not let it affect you, that's the key.
"We play this game every day and unlike other sports, you get a chance to redeem yourself right away. Everyone will endure slumps and down times, but if you trust yourself and the work you put in, it will pay off."
