Orioles DFA Gentry, recall Rickard
KANSAS CITY -- The Orioles designated veteran Craig Gentry for assignment prior to Friday's game, a move that clears a spot for outfielder Joey Rickard to join the club. Rickard was officially recalled from Triple-A Norfolk while Jhan Marienz was outrighted to Norfolk after clearing waivers.
Gentry was a potential trade candidate for the Orioles and could still be picked up by another club though a deal would have to happen on Friday for him to be postseason-eligible.
The 34-year-old, known for his speed and defense, batted .269/.321/.346 in 68 games with the Orioles. Gentry saw an uptick in playing time over the past week and a half as the O's tried to showcase him to other clubs. This is Rickard's fourth stint with the club this season. He's batted .227/.288/.420 in 59 games this season.
The Orioles roster is now at 38 in advance of roster expansion which begins on Saturday.
Worth noting
• Mark Trumbo will undergo left knee surgery on either Sept. 6 or 7 in Maryland. The procedure will be done by Dr. Leigh Ann Curl and Trumbo hopes to be ready for Spring Training.
• The Orioles are expected to call up at least two players on Saturday, manager Buck Showalter said.
• The Orioles have agreed to terms with outfielder Damian Valdez, a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic.
