O's acquire Herb from Giants for Yastrzemski
SARASOTA, Fla. -- An organizational fixture with a well-known name for more than half a decade, Mike Yastrzemski's tenure with the Orioles ended Saturday when the club traded him to the Giants for right-hander Tyler Herb.
Herb, 26, is a career Minor Leaguer who reached Triple-A with San Francisco in 2018. He went 2-8 with a 5.35 in 13 starts at that level last year.
A 14th-round selection by the O's out of Vanderbilt in 2013, Yastrzemski spent the next five summers climbing the organization ladder, reaching Major League camp for the first time this spring. But it would have been difficult for him to earn playing time at Triple-A Norfolk, where touted prospects including Austin Hays and DJ Stewart, as well as Anthony Santander, will probably begin the year.
Yastrzemski, 28, played much of the past three seasons at Norfolk, hitting .242 with a .739 OPS across 269 games. He is the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.
