Cruz, Tellez torch homers in big inning to down Braves

ATLANTA -- After struggling to generate much offense the first two games at Truist Park, the Pirates’ bats came alive for a two-out rally in the fifth inning Sunday. and both lifted two-run shots to salvage the final game of the series, as the Pirates beat the Braves, 4-2.

The Pirates were limited to just two runs through the first 23 innings of the series, but Cruz jumped on a cutter from Spencer Schwellenbach and hit it 117.3 mph -- the fifth hardest-hit ball struck for a home run this season. Two batters later, Tellez jumped on a splitter and sent it a Statcast-projected 421 feet to right.

Pirates starter Bailey Falter threw 30 sliders -- the second most in a start in his Major League career and 10 more than he had in an outing this season – over five innings of one-run ball. While his command became a bit spottier as the game progressed, walking four on the afternoon, he looked stronger than he did last time out against the Reds, where he said afterwards he felt tired in-game.

Kyle Nicolas gave two innings of scoreless relief, followed by Carmen Mlodzinski and Aroldis Chapman, who got the save. The Pirates went 3-3 on their road trip through Cincinnati and Atlanta, and they are now 40-43 overall.
