On no sleep, Giron goes 6-for-6 in Class A debut

Padres second-year pro Ruddy Giron accomplished a feat that many professional ballplayers never sniff, and he did it in his first Class A game, with little to no sleep.

The 18-year-old Dominican shortstop capped off a perfect 6-for-6 performance with a home run for Fort Wayne on Monday in his 2015 debut. And he had to overcome a middle-of-the-night wake-up call, a lack of sleep and a cross-country trip to do it.

According to the team's website, Giron got a call at 3 a.m. MST and was told that he needed to catch a flight from Phoenix to Chicago, then another to Cleveland in order to make it to East Lake, Ohio, where he was penciled in as the leadoff hitter in the TinCaps' series opener against the Lake County Captains at 6:30 p.m. ET.

"He got here, just got something to eat and put his uniform on," TinCaps manager Francisco Morales told MiLB.com. "That's what gamers do. He's a gamer."

Giron singled in each of his first five at-bats before belting a solo homer in the top of the ninth to cap off his memorable night. He also stole a base in the TinCaps' 9-2 win over Lake County.

The six-hit performance was the second in Fort Wayne's history, and first since May 27, 1993 when Rene Lopez went 6-for-6 against the Beloit Brewers.
