Davidson (No. 23) rakes his way to Triple-A
Logan Davidson's somewhat sluggish ascent through the Minors has been rather atypical for a first-round Draft pick. Slowly but surely, though, the 25-year-old infielder is inching closer to his Major League dream.
Davidson, Oakland’s No. 23 prospect per MLB Pipeline, earned a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this week on the heels of what has been a strong first two months of the season. Through 48 games with Double-A Midland, Davidson hit .297 with an .863 OPS, seven homers, 11 doubles, a triple, 28 RBIs and two stolen bases.
The son of former Twins and Astros outfielder Mark Davidson, Logan sought to carve out his own big league path by starring as a shortstop for three seasons at Clemson University.
Selected 29th overall by the A’s in the 2019 MLB Draft, Davidson seemingly hit a wall in his development over the past couple of years. The switch-hitter spent the majority of 2021 at Double-A and repeated the level last season, dealing with a nagging groin injury that the A’s felt affected his performance at the plate as he slashed .252/.337/.406 in 111 games.
Long regarded for his strong ability to work quality at-bats, evidenced by his high walk totals throughout the Minor Leagues, Davidson is showing signs of a potential breakthrough, which would not come as a total surprise given his pedigree.
Defensively, Davidson is emerging as a valuable utility infielder, having logged over 10 games played at first, second and third base so far this season.
“Development is not linear and talent normally rises,” A’s assistant GM and director of player personnel Billy Owens said. “[Giants prospects] Patrick Bailey and Luis Matos are great examples across the Bay. Logan has high character, a strong work ethic, patience, power and solid defense. It’s encouraging to see him off to a positive start.”
Lawrence to the moon
A’s No. 7 prospect Lawrence Butler's eighth homer of 2023 was a majestic solo shot to right that cleared the berm at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland. Entering Sunday, the outfielder was batting .281 with eight homers, 15 doubles, 38 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 53 games with Double-A Midland.
