Sox prospect Song receives flight school orders
Red Sox pitching prospect Noah Song’s big league dreams are on hold for now.
The Navy has ordered Song to report to flight school at the Naval Air Station Pensacola military base in Florida by June 26, according to a report by the Capital Gazette. Song submitted a waiver request to the Department of Defense last October seeking to delay his active service duty commitment to the Navy until after his professional baseball career was complete, but he changed his mind and submitted an updated request to pursue flight training.
Song did so after learning that a new Department of Defense policy that allows service academy graduates to pursue a pro sports career immediately following graduation, enacted after Song graduated from the Naval Academy, would not be retroactively applied to his situation.
The Red Sox drafted Song out of the Naval Academy in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft, and MLB Pipeline ranks him as Boston’s No. 6 prospect. Song led NCAA Division I with a 15.4 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate in the spring of 2019, and he is the highest Draft pick in Navy program history. Song was commissioned as a Naval flight officer less than two weeks before the Red Sox drafted him, and it was understood at the time that he might not be allowed to pursue a career in pro baseball until after the 2021 season.
The Navy permitted Song to pitch in the Minor Leagues last summer while he awaited orders, and the right-hander impressed with the Class A Short-Season Lowell Spinners, posting a 1.06 ERA across seven starts. He also pitched for Team USA at the World Baseball-Softball Confederation Premier12 Tournament.
