Cruz, Hendricks named Players of the Week
Twins designated hitter Nelson Cruz and Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks have been named the first Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet of the 2020 season.
Cruz earned American League honors after going 7-for-13 (.538) with three homers, two doubles, 10 RBIs and a 1.956 OPS in Minnesota’s first three games. He leads the Majors in hits, homers, RBIs, OPS and total bases.
The 40-year-old slugger contributed to the Twins’ 14-2 win over the White Sox on Sunday with four extra-base hits (two homers, two doubles) and seven RBIs. This is the seventh time he has been named Player of the Week.
Hendricks, meanwhile, is now a two-time recipient of the National League Player of the Week Award, previously winning it in 2016.
The Cubs righty tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks against the Brewers on Friday, giving him MLB’s first Opening Day shutout since Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw threw one in 2013.
