Nats receive Murcer Award for charity work
With their seven-run ninth-inning comeback vs. the Mets on Tuesday night, the Nationals pulled off an epic win that surely will be discussed for seasons to come.
But in terms of overall impact in the game of life, the victory pales in comparison to the hardware taken home by the club prior to first pitch.
For the second straight year, the Nationals were feted on-field as the Senior Circuit recipient of the Bobby Murcer Award, which honors the team in each league that provides the greatest level of resources to Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.), an organization dedicated to confidentially and charitably assisting members of baseball’s large family. The benevolent organization has aided everyone from current and former Major and Minor League personnel, to scouts, umpires, athletic trainers and many more figures connected with the game.
Since its founding in 1986, the organization has collectively raised more than $43 million to facilitate everything from as-needed grants to health-care resources to rehabilitative counseling.
There are few more deserving of having such an award named after them than Murcer, a five-time All-Star “with a great heart” whose “compassion for others and strong will to do the right thing shone brightest as a member of the B.A.T. board of directors,” according to the P.A. announcer at Nationals Park on Tuesday. The Murcer trophy was presented by Murcer’s widow, Kay Murcer, and granddaughter Ava Murcer, as well as B.A.T.’s executive director Erik Nilsen. Accepting the trophy on behalf of the franchise was first baseman Ryan Zimmerman.
“As players, we know how important B.A.T. is to everyone involved in this game,” said Zimmerman in a statement released earlier this year. “The baseball community is lucky to have a group that will lend assistance and do what they can for those in need. I’m proud of the Washington Nationals organization, my teammates, coaches and staff who continue to donate on a yearly basis. We are honored to accept this award for the second straight year and we pledge to contribute year in and year out.”
The Toronto Blue Jays won this year’s award for the American League and accepted their trophy in June.
