Nats part ways with four coaches, to revamp staff for '24
WASHINGTON -- The Nationals staff will include several new faces next season after the team parted ways with four coaches on Monday.
Bench coach Tim Bogar, first base coach Eric Young Jr., third base coach Gary Disarcina and assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler will not return for the 2024 season, a source confirmed to MLB.com. Britt Ghiroli from The Athletic first reported the news. The club has not announced the moves.
The changes to manager Dave Martinez’s coaching staff come one week after the Nats went 71-91 this season, a 16-win improvement from 2022. It was their highest win total since 2019, but they finished fifth in the NL East for the fourth consecutive season.
Among the National League, Washington ranked 12th in runs scored, fifth in hits, last in home runs, first in fewest strikeouts, eighth in stolen bases, 14th in ERA and 13th in opponents’ batting average.
“Davey and I will sit down after the season’s over, and we’ll go over that with ownership and make those decisions on what we want to do and who we want to bring back, if any or all,” general manager Mike Rizzo said of the coaching staff the final weekend of the season in Atlanta. “Those are usually Davey decisions, but we always have input with it with myself and the front office.”
Bogar, 56, served six seasons on the Nationals coaching staff, including the last four as bench coach. He worked closely with the infielders. This year, Bogar reached 15 seasons of experience as a Major League coach.
Young, 38, held his first position on a big league coaching staff as the Nationals first base coach since 2022. A 10-year Major League outfielder, Young worked with the Nats outfielders as well as baserunners.
Disarcina, 55, joined the Nationals staff as the third base coach for the 2022 season following four seasons with the Mets. Prior to that, he was the Red Sox bench coach in ‘17 and on the Angels coaching staff from ‘14-’16.
Roessler, 63, joined the Nats’ coaching staff in 2020. His previous roles included Yankees player development advisor (2019), Mets hitting coach (‘18) and Mets assistant hitting coach (‘14-17).
Martinez signed a multiyear contract extension with the Nationals in August. Hitting coach Darnell Coles, pitching coach Jim Hickey, catching and strategy coach Henry Blanco and bullpen coach Ricky Bones remain on the staff.
