A week after appearing in the Futures Game during All-Star Weekend, Nationals No. 2 prospect Brady House was promoted to the Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday. The 20-year-old, who shifted from shortstop to third base this season, began the year in Single-A.
“Getting at a new position and then continuing to offensively play the way he did, it was pretty impressive,” said general manager Mike Rizzo.
House appeared in 36 games with Fredericksburg and earned his first promotion of the season on June 9. He hit .318 with a .907 OPS and three home runs in 16 games with High-A Wilmington to advance to Harrisburg. The Nationals’ goal for the 2021 first-round Draft pick was to finish the season at Double-A, and he arrived in July.
“We just thought he was ready,” said Rizzo. “We’re going to challenge him to the next level, and we’ll see how he does. No expectations. It’s an aggressive level for him. … We thought, ‘He’s performing well. We’ll get him to Double-A since he’s going there anyways.’”
House joins Nationals’ top prospect James Wood and No. 5 prospect Robert Hassell III with the Senators.
Green dealing with wrist sprain
Nats No. 4 prospect Elijah Green, 19, has been sidelined for three weeks because of a left wrist sprain. He last appeared in a game with Single-A Fredericksburg on June 28.
“We had it MRI-ed and it’s all clean, except for it was in a splint for about five or six days,” Rizzo said. “So now he’s rehabbing it to return back to play, and we’ll see him back in Fredericksburg soon.”
Green, the fifth overall pick in last year’s Draft, is hitting .218 with 22 stolen bases across 58 games in his first full season of pro ball. He has 106 strikeouts in 248 plate appearances.
“I see elite defense,” Rizzo said of the outfielder. “I see elite base running, base stealing. His exit velocities are terrific. We’ve got to get past the contact part of it. A lot of it is pitch selection, and that’s tough for a lot of young players. … But he’s such a superb, elite athlete and his skillset is so great, I’m not worried at all about it. … Right now, he’s swinging at too many bad pitches. So that’s something we have to work on.”
Lile promoted to High-A
Outfielder Daylen Lile, the Nationals’ No. 15 prospect, was promoted to High-A Wilmington on Tuesday. He was named the Carolina League Player of the Week earlier this month for hitting .471 with a home run, three doubles, one triple, six RBIs and six runs scored from July 3-9. Lile missed all of last season because of Tommy John surgery.
Hill powers Red Wings to victory
Outfielder Derek Hill is slugging in his return to Triple-A. On Tuesday, Hill went 4-for-5 with two triples, five RBIs and three runs scored in Rochester’s 12-8 win over Durham. His go-ahead triple in the eighth inning plated two runs to break a late-game tie. Hill, who began the season with the Red Wings, appeared in 13 games with the Nationals and was designated for assignment on July 5.
