Betts dealing with stiff back; Bellinger still out
The Dodgers are monitoring a pair of situations that have the potential to dramatically impact their season.
As expected, Cody Bellinger, who has been dealing with a sore calf, was not in Wednesday’s lineup against the A’s in Oakland. Right fielder Mookie Betts was not in Wednesday’s lineup because of a stiff lower back. It was his second day off in less than a week.
"Today, [Betts] came in with a tight back," manager Dave Roberts said following the Dodgers' 4-3 loss. "The plan was to play him. Obviously, if the player doesn't feel well, he's not going to play. The plan is to run him out there a lot; depending on how he is feeling and the schedule, we'll pick off-days. The plan is to have him out there quite often."
The team has a scheduled day off Thursday before its home opener against the Nationals on Friday at Dodger Stadium, and Roberts said he expects Betts to be back in the lineup then.
As for Bellinger, Roberts would not rule out a stint on the 10-day injured list.
"There's still a possibility," Roberts said. "As we get through tomorrow and get to the ballpark on Friday, we will probably make a decision then."
Bellinger, who is 4-for-19 with two RBIs in four games this season, was removed from Monday's game in the ninth inning after a collision at first base with A’s pitcher Reymin Guduan. On Tuesday, Roberts said there was no stress fracture or structural damage.
Betts, who is 8-for-23 with six runs scored and two stolen bases this season, started in center field Tuesday. He was given the day off Saturday against the Rockies.
