PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies will receive a formal warning from Major League Baseball for making a pitching change in the third inning Saturday night in Atlanta without having left-hander Hoby Milner warmed up and ready to enter the game, a source said Sunday.
MLB is still reviewing the incident, but it believes umpire Jerry Layne handled the situation appropriately given the circumstances.
Layne allowed Milner to throw a few warmup pitches before pitching in the game. That is unlikely to happen again in the future. Layne said afterward he was concerned for Milner's health. Braves manager Brian Snitker was ejected after arguing that Layne had given Milner extra time.
Milner said nobody had told him to warm up when Phillies manager Gabe Kapler called him into the game. Kapler called it a communication breakdown and took full responsibility for it.
ESPN's Buster Olney first reported that MLB plans to formally warn the Phillies.
