Major League Baseball is preparing to install a new league-wide fan code of conduct for the 2018 season.
All 30 teams currently have their own codes of conduct in place for their respective ballparks, though the policies vary. MLB's plan to adopt a new league-wide code would create minimum standards that would be uniform across the game, as well as consequences for violations of those standards. The code of conduct will be based in part on the current practices around the league, a source said.
"We are working with the clubs on security and fan conduct initiatives at all of our ballparks, including during last week's Owners Meetings," MLB spokesperson Michael Teevan said. "We will be issuing a league-wide fan code of conduct for the 2018 season."
ESPN.com was first to report the league's intention to implement the new code of conduct.
The league has been working in recent months to develop the guidelines that will make up the code of conduct, receiving input from teams in the process.
While safety and security initiatives were discussed at last week's quarterly Owners Meetings in Chicago, a source said the new code of conduct is expected to be presented and potentially approved at the next Owners Meetings, slated for November in Orlando, Fla.
