Historic HRs, a no-no (and a no-no that almost was) among top stats of the week

August 9th, 2024

Here’s our weekly look at 10 mind-blowing notes from the last week in baseball (Aug. 2-8).

Ring my bell: In his first game with the Diamondbacks on Friday, Josh Bell crushed two home runs. The second came off a 102.9 mph pitch, the fastest pitch hit for a home run under pitch tracking (2008). The prior fastest hit for a homer was 102.8 mph by Rafael Devers on August 13, 2017.

Snellzilla: Blake Snell threw the 18th no-hitter in Giants franchise history on Friday, pitching into the ninth inning for the first time in his career. Snell became the fifth reigning Cy Young winner to throw a no-hitter, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He joined 2016 Jake Arrieta, 2014 Clayton Kershaw, 1971 Bob Gibson and 1964 Sandy Koufax.

All rise: Aaron Judge hit his 16th first-inning home run of the season on Saturday. That’s tied for the third-most in a season, behind only 2001 Alex Rodriguez (18) and 1999 Mark McGwire (17). Judge is up to 298 home runs and has played 948 games entering Thursday. The current fewest games played to 300 career home runs is 1,087 by Ralph Kiner.

Electric Elly: On Monday, Elly De La Cruz notched the 20th game with four extra-base hits by a Reds player since at least 1901, becoming the youngest Cincinnati player to do so in that span. On Tuesday, he racked up another four hits, becoming the 13th Reds player with consecutive four-hit games since 1901 and the first since Dmitri Young in 2001. He was the youngest MLB player to do so since Cameron Maybin in 2008.

High-ball hitting: CJ Abrams hit a unique home run on Tuesday, homering off a pitch that was 4.42 feet above the ground. It was the fourth-highest pitch hit for a home run under Statcast (2015), behind only Kyle Higashioka at 4.61 feet on June 12, 2022, Mark Trumbo at 4.57 feet on May 8, 2017, and Colin Moran at 4.45 feet on May 22, 2018.

No-hitter ender: Corey Seager homered with two outs in the ninth inning on Tuesday off Framber Valdez to break up a no-hitter. It was the second time this season a player homered with two outs in the ninth to break up a no-hitter -- J.D. Martinez did so in a Braves combo effort on May 11. This is the first time that’s happened twice in a season on record. Seager has now broken up a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning twice, the only player on record to do so multiple times. He also did so on August 25, 2016, hitting a single to end a no-hit bit by Matt Moore.

Mr. Lapara: José Ramírez hit his 30th home run of the season on Wednesday, giving him his third career season with at least 30 homers and 20 stolen bases. That is the most such seasons in Cleveland history and tied with Alex Rodriguez and Howard Johnson for the most by a third baseman (min 50% games played at 3B each season).

Action Jackson: Jackson Merrill hit two home runs on Wednesday, including a game-tying homer in the ninth inning. He is the first player with multiple multi-homer games that also included a game-tying or go-ahead HR in the ninth inning or later at age 21 or younger, per Elias. In total, Merrill has three game-tying or go-ahead HR in the ninth inning or later this season, tied for most in a season at age 21 or younger in the expansion era (1961), with 2023 Francisco Alvarez, 2011 Giancarlo Stanton, 2011 Eric Hosmer, 2006 Ryan Zimmerman and 1965 Tony Horton.

Schwarbs: Kyle Schwarber hit his 11th leadoff home run of the season on Wednesday, tying the Phillies franchise record that he set last year. He followed that up with two more home runs, becoming the first Phillies player since 1900 with a three-homer game out of the leadoff spot. He now has two three-homer games in his career, both out of the leadoff spot (2021 with WSH). The only other players with multiple three-homer games out of the leadoff spot are Mookie Betts (five) and Alfonso Soriano (three).

Current Ironman: Matt Olson has played 572 consecutive games entering Friday, dating to May 2, 2021. There have been only six other streaks of at least 500 since 2000, per Elias. They belong to 2000-07 Miguel Tejada (1,152 consecutive games), 2018-22 Whit Merrifield (553), 2010-14 Prince Fielder (547), 2000-03 Alex Rodriguez (546), 2003-06 Hideki Matsui (518) and 2004-07 Mark Teixeira (507).
