New No. 1 in Power Rankings is on another roll
The latest edition of MLB.com’s weekly Power Rankings features a new team atop the list, a shakeup among the remaining clubs in the top five, and a surprising surge from a National League Central club that continues to raise eyebrows early on this season.
Biggest Jump: The Pirates remain the most surprising team of the season so far after winning seven straight games last week to improve to 16-7. Pittsburgh jumped seven places in the rankings, from No. 19 to No. 12. The Bucs opened the week with a three-game sweep of the Rockies in Denver and followed that up by taking four straight from the Reds at PNC Park. With an exciting mix of young, rising stars and veterans including franchise icon Andrew McCutchen, this is a fun team to keep tabs on.
Biggest Drop: The Angels and Guardians each fell six spots in this week’s rankings. Los Angeles went from No. 13 to No. 19, and Cleveland dropped from No. 11 to No. 17. The Halos opened the week with a win over the Red Sox to salvage one of the four games they played at Fenway Park, and then dropped two of three to the Yankees in New York before beating the Royals in two of three at Angel Stadium over the weekend. The Guardians, meanwhile, went 2-4 during the week, losing two of three against the Tigers in Detroit and two of three against the Marlins in Miami.
Power Rankings Top 5:
1. Rays, 19-3 (last week: 2)
Since it’s baseball, and anything can happen on any given day, the red-hot Rays opened their week with a loss to the Reds. Then Tampa Bay decided to just not lose again the rest of the week, taking the next two in Cincinnati before authoring a home sweep of the White Sox that included two thrilling walk-off victories to remain a perfect 13-0 at Tropicana Field this season. The Rays have also homered in 22 straight games, the longest streak by a team to begin the season (the longest streak overall is 31 by the 2019 Yankees).
2. Braves, 14-8 (last week: 1)
Atlanta dropped out of the top spot in the rankings following a 2-4 week that opened with a pair of wins before a four-game slide that included a loss in the Braves’ series finale against the Padres in San Diego and a sweep at home by the Astros. Prior to the four-game skid, the Braves had won eight in a row to claim the No. 1 position in our rankings. On the bright side for Atlanta, ace Max Fried was very good in his second start back from the injured list Sunday, when he tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the defending World Series champions.
3. Mets, 14-9 (last week: 9)
The Mets finished a 10-game California road trip with a loss to the Giants on Sunday night at Oracle Park, but they still went 7-3 on the trip and registered a 4-3 record for the week. New York vaulted six spots up the rankings thanks to its strong play away from Citi Field, which has the squad neck-and-neck with the Braves atop the early NL East standings. The Mets will be challenged in the coming days, particularly in the starting rotation, with Max Scherzer serving a suspension “for violating the prohibitions on foreign substances” during his latest start, and Justin Verlander still at least a week or so away from coming off the injured list.
4. Brewers, 15-7 (last week: 6)
The Brewers went to Seattle and swept the Mariners in a three-game set to start the week, but then had their four-game win streak snapped by the Red Sox at American Family Field in the opener of a weekend series on Friday. Milwaukee ended up dropping two of three to the Red Sox to conclude a 4-2 week. Rowdy Tellez continued his incredible success against Boston with homers in two of the three games to increase his total to seven on the season, while Brian Anderson continued his strong start to the season with a pair of homers in the series finale Sunday, giving him five. Unfortunately, that finale included a bullpen meltdown that resulted in a nine-run eighth inning for the Red Sox.
5. Yankees, 13-9 (last week: 4)
The Yanks hadn't lost a series to open their 2023 campaign until the Blue Jays came into the Bronx and took two of three over the weekend, concluding a 3-3 week for New York. Outside of a 9-3 win over the Angels last Thursday, the Yankees’ lineup had a tough time scoring runs last week, totaling 10 in the other five games. There were some bright spots, though, with star rookie Anthony Volpe belting a go-ahead homer late in Saturday’s win over Toronto before a DJ LeMahieu single won it in the ninth, and rookie right-hander Clarke Schmidt’s career-high eight strikeouts against the Blue Jays on Sunday.
