Experts answer 5 burning Hot Stove questions
We're in the very early stages of the offseason, so all of your predictions on where certain players will sign or which teams will make the biggest moves could still be correct.
We here at MLB.com made our fair share of predictions in a recent staff poll. Part one of those poll results, which focused on where some of the top free agents in this year's class will land, was published a few days ago.
Today, we bring you the top results from five more questions surrounding Hot Stove season.
Note: Although Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki is coming to the Major Leagues, he was not considered for any question since he has not been posted and is not yet a free agent.
Who do you think is the best free agent besides Juan Soto?
1. Corbin Burnes, RHP (58%)
2. Willy Adames, SS (12%)
3. Alex Bregman, 3B (10%)
There are a bunch of stellar starting pitchers available this winter, but none of them can match Burnes in terms of reliability and dominance. Since the start of 2021 -- his Cy Young season -- he has recorded a 2.94 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and averaged 189 innings per year.
Adames, the crown jewel of the shortstop market, just produced a 32-homer, 21-steal season. Entering his age-29 campaign, Adames can also get it done on defense. Although he registered 1 out above average this year, Adames racked up 26 OAA from 2022-23.
Re-signing Bregman is the Astros' top offseason priority, but they will face plenty of competition for the 30-year-old. Bregman has hit at least 23 homers in each of the past three seasons and has averaged a 124 OPS+ during that span. A steady presence at the hot corner, Bregman earned his first Gold Glove this year.

Which team will have the splashiest offseason?
1. Mets (58%)
2. Yankees (19%)
3. Dodgers (12%)
Signing Soto would be the splashiest move of the offseason for any team, and all of these clubs have been mentioned in Soto rumors. The Mets have spent lavishly under owner Steve Cohen and are expected to pull out all the stops to win the bidding war for the generational talent. These big-market contenders have also been linked to Sasaki and left-handed ace Blake Snell among other headline free agents.
Other teams receiving votes: Giants, Mariners, Angels, Nationals
Which free agent outside of Mark Feinsand’s top 25 do you think is the most underrated?
1. Walker Buehler, RHP (15%)
2. Joc Pederson, DH (10%)
3. Nick Pivetta, RHP (8%)
Perhaps no player increased their open-market value during the 2024 postseason more than Buehler. After a forgettable regular season (5.38 ERA over 75 1/3 innings), the right-hander put up 10 scoreless innings and 13 K's over his final three appearances in the playoffs. He recorded the final three outs of the World Series and owns an impressive 3.04 career ERA over 94 2/3 career postseason frames.
Pederson's game has definite flaws, but he does one thing extremely well: mash right-handed pitching. He has a career .844 OPS against righties, and that number shot up to .923 this season. His 151 OPS+ this year was a career-best.
After striking out 172 batters over 145 2/3 innings this year, Pivetta has a "surprisingly strong" market, according to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi. The Red Sox gave Pivetta the qualifying offer, but the 31-year-old might get a bigger contract.
Other players receiving votes: Jeff Hoffman, RHP; Jose Quintana, LHP; Nick Martinez, RHP; Max Kepler, OF; Paul Goldschmidt, 1B; Carlos Santana, 1B; Michael Conforto, OF; Blake Treinen, RHP; Travis d’Arnaud, C; Alex Verdugo, OF; Harrison Bader, OF; Jose Iglesias, 2B; Kenley Jansen, RHP; Luis Urías, 3B; Martin Perez, LHP; Aroldis Chapman, LHP; Tommy Pham, OF
A year from now, who will be talked about as the “best” signing?
1. Juan Soto, OF (40%)
2. Christian Walker, 1B (14%)
3. Willy Adames, SS (8%)
You don't see many players who are on a Hall of Fame track reach free agency right after their 26th birthday. Whichever team ends up with Soto should feel pretty good about that acquisition in both the short and long term.
Walker may not be the headliner among free-agent first basemen -- that title belongs to Pete Alonso -- but he may be the best all-around player available at the position. Both he and Alonso offer prodigious power, but Walker is much stronger on defense. The three-time Gold Glover finished second among first basemen with 13 OAA this year. Alonso was near the bottom with minus-9 OAA. Still, the 29-year-old Alonso will likely command a longer and more lucrative deal than the one given to the 33-year-old Walker.
Other players receiving votes: Corbin Burnes, RHP; Max Fried, LHP; Anthony Santander, OF; Jack Flaherty, RHP; Teoscar Hernández, OF; Walker Buehler, RHP; Nathan Eovaldi, RHP; Alex Bregman, 3B; Shane Bieber, RHP; Tanner Scott, LHP
Who will be the biggest name traded this offseason?
1. Garrett Crochet, LHP, White Sox (35%)
2. Devin Williams, RHP, Brewers (17%)
3. Nolan Arenado, 3B, Cardinals (12%)
Crochet's name was bandied about leading up to the 2024 Trade Deadline. White Sox general manager Chris Getz said during last week's General Managers Meetings that, compared to the Deadline, a greater number of teams have expressed interest in the left-hander this offseason. The 25-year-old Crochet, who is under club control for two more seasons, is coming off of a breakout campaign that saw him make the AL All-Star team and strike out 209 batters over 146 innings. Expect to see his name in trade rumors throughout the winter.
Williams is entering his final season before free agency, and Brewers general manager Matt Arnold has said the team will "stay open-minded" about the closer's future. Arenado may be on the move if he is willing to waive his no-trade clause. The 33-year-old third baseman recorded a 99 OPS+ this season and is owed $52 million over the next three seasons.
