'Next-guy-up mentality' leads LA past Arizona
PHOENIX -- The Dodgers’ bullpen game on Friday was spontaneous. The same approach for Saturday had been planned, and it worked out much better -- even though the relief corps had been further taxed than expected.
A day after using nine pitchers in a 10-inning loss to the D-backs, the Dodgers needed seven to get through Saturday’s game at Chase Field. However, the final five pitchers didn’t allow a run, while Justin Turner’s tiebreaking two-run homer helped lift Los Angeles to an 8-3 win.
Victor González, Alex Vesia, Joe Kelly, Blake Treinen and Edwin Uceta combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the Dodgers’ victory. Los Angeles may have gone 14-12 in July -- the .538 win percentage its lowest of any month this season -- but it remains only three games back of San Francisco in the National League West.
“It’s been next-guy-up mentality and finding ways to win ballgames, especially these last two days,” Turner said. “I told our guys, ‘Tip our cap to our bullpen out there grinding.’ Some guys going three days in a row, four days in a row, getting up, finding ways to get outs and keep us in games and give us a chance.”
Turner’s 19th home run of the season was his seventh of July as he capped his hot month with a 2-for-5 showing. His homer jump-started the Dodgers’ go-ahead rally in the seventh, which resulted in four runs on five hits as they sent nine batters to the plate.
Right-hander Mitch White made his first career MLB start, cruising for most of his 3 2/3 innings. He retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before issuing a one-out walk to Asdrúbal Cabrera in the third. That was immediately followed by a two-run homer from Kole Calhoun, which cut the Dodgers’ lead to 3-2.
White bounced back to retire Drew Ellis on a foul popout on the next pitch, but manager Dave Roberts then handed the ball over to lefty Garrett Cleavinger, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City -- along with Uceta -- for extra arms in the bullpen Saturday. Cleavinger allowed a game-tying solo homer to Nick Ahmed in the fifth.
Not only was that the final run allowed by the Dodgers’ bullpen, but the D-backs had only two hits after that point. In the sixth, Vesia erased a one-out single by inducing a double play, ending a scoreless frame that earned him his first MLB win.
Kelly, Treinen and Uceta each pitched a perfect inning to close it out as Los Angeles’ relievers combined to retire Arizona’s final 10 batters of the game.
White didn’t find out he would be starting the bullpen game until a few hours before first pitch. He wasn’t stretched out enough to go too deep, but he impressed while he was on the mound, tossing 41 of his 58 pitches for strikes and relying heavily on his four-seam fastball, which he threw 37 times with an average velocity of 95.2 mph.
“Fastball command was big for me, that’s what I’ve been working on a lot, especially in OKC, just moving the fastball in and out and putting it where I want to and then spinning from there,” said White, who has been shuttled between the Majors and Triple-A this season. “This was a lot better.”
Considering the state of the rest of the bullpen, Roberts was impressed by how White set the tone for the remainder of the night.
“To come in and go three-plus like he did, attack the zone, just aggressive, it was just so fun to watch,” Roberts said. “And we needed that.”
Tony Gonsolin went only 1 2/3 innings in his start on Friday and landed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation on Saturday, while Josiah Gray, who was originally scheduled to start Saturday, was dealt to the Nationals at the Trade Deadline. But Los Angeles’ need for bullpen games should eventually dwindle, with Max Scherzer likely to make his Dodgers debut on Wednesday, Clayton Kershaw ideally returning in August and Danny Duffy potentially joining the mix in September.
So while the Dodgers are piecing together wins any way they can now, they’re eager for their new additions and returning players to make an impact heading into the final two months of the regular season.
“We’re excited,” Turner said. “We have one goal in mind, and that’s to win another championship.”
