Milestone home runs hit in Philadelphia

Professional baseball has been around Philadelphia dating back to 1883 when the Phillies became a member of the National League. In 1901, the Philadelphia Athletics became a charter member of the American League.

Significant milestone homers that have been hit in Philadelphia have a Hall of Fame flavor.

On Sept. 2, 1927, Yankees slugger Babe Ruth hit a first-inning homer off Rube Walberg of the A's in front 20,000 fans at Shibe Park. It was the first 400th homer in big league history. Walberg gave up 17 home runs to Ruth, the most by any pitcher whom Ruth faced.

On April 20, 1966, Hank Aaron of the Braves homered off the Phillies' Bo Belinsky in the ninth inning at Connie Mack Stadium. There were 6,855 fans in attendance. In the first inning, Aaron hit his 399th career homer off Ray Culp.

On June 14, 2004, Jim Thome of the Phillies went deep in the first inning off Reds starter Jose Acevedo at Citizens Bank Park. Rescheduled from an April rainout, there were 44,710 fans on hand to watch the milestone homer. A few days later, a bronze plaque was placed at the exact location the historic blast landed: Section 147, Row 4, Seat 6.

On Sept. 24, 1940, Jimmie Foxx of the Red Sox hit a sixth-inning homer off George Caster of the A's at Shibe Park in the first game of a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. There were 1,500 fans in attendance to watch Foxx join Babe Ruth in the 500-homer club. Foxx began his career at Shibe Park playing for the A's in 1925. He hit 302 homers with the A's from 1925-35. Foxx ended his 20-year career back at Shibe Park with the Phillies in 1945. Seven of his 534 career homers came with the Phillies.

On May 7, 2006, Barry Bonds of the Giants hit a sixth-inning homer off Jon Lieber of the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. It was the last home run Bonds hit in Philadelphia. Career homer No. 744 came on May 5, 2007, at AT&T Park and was his last one against the Phillies. It also came against Lieber. Bonds' 27 home runs at Veterans Stadium was the most for a visiting player.

Other nuggets
Mike Schmidt hit his first home run (Sept. 16, 1972, against Expos left-hander Balor Moore) and last (No. 548 on May 2, 1989, vs. Astros lefty Jim Deshaies) at Veterans Stadium. Each of Schmidt's milestone home runs (Nos. 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500) came on the road.

Robin Roberts surrendered his 400th home run as a Phillie on Aug. 28, 1961, to Milwaukee's Roy McMillan at Connie Mack Stadium. Roberts was the first pitcher to give up 400 home runs.
