Yastrzemski named to All-MLB Second Team

December 10th, 2020

The pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign robbed Giants outfielder of a chance to make his first career National League All-Star team, but the 30-year-old late bloomer still earned recognition for his outstanding sophomore season when he was named to the All-MLB Second Team on Wednesday.

Yastrzemski was one of three outfielders on the Second Team, joining the Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. and the Mets’ Michael Conforto. The Angels’ Mike Trout, the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts and the Nationals’ Juan Soto were the three outfielders on the First Team.

Yastrzemski is the first Giants player to be named to the All-MLB Team, which is in its second year and recognizes and commemorates the top performances by players during the season.

The selection process started in early November, with 50% of the vote coming from fans and 50% coming from a panel of experts. First baseman Brandon Belt and second baseman Donovan Solano were also nominated for the All-MLB Team, but Yastrzemski was the lone San Francisco player to make either team.

Acquired from the Orioles in exchange for Minor League pitcher Tyler Herb in 2019, Yastrzemski has been a revelation for the Giants since debuting in the Majors in May 2019. He continued to build off his breakout rookie campaign by batting .297 with a .968 OPS, 10 home runs and 35 RBIs over 54 games in '20. His all-around excellence earned him an eighth-place finish in NL MVP Award voting this year, the best result by a Giants player since Buster Posey placed sixth in 2014.
