Sore right toe keeps Trout out of lineup
CHICAGO -- Mike Trout was in the original Angels lineup on Sunday, but he was scratched about two hours before the game with the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field because of continued soreness in his right toe.
Despite a light rain falling in the morning, Trout did some running on the field to test the toe. He walked off after a few minutes and was soon scratched.
“I’m just trying to maintain the soreness,” Trout said before testing the toe. “It’s been sore for a while now. Just trying to see if I can go.
“It’s still sore, but I want to be out there.”
The two-time American League Most Valuable Player Award winner was removed from Friday night’s series opener in the fifth inning because of the toe. He appeared as a pinch-hitter Saturday night but was removed for a pinch-runner after being intentionally walked.
Trout has been bothered by the toe for a few weeks, but he had missed only one game -- Aug. 28 against the Rangers -- before this weekend.
“He probably could play, but the concern is we’d have to take him out of the game again,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said.
“There really wasn’t a ton of improvement overnight. For some reason, sometimes he can come back the next day and he’s feeling fine, and other times it takes a little longer for the soreness to get out of there.”
Trout entered Sunday tied with Pete Alonso of the Mets for the Majors' home run lead with 45.
Worth noting
• Catcher Max Stassi hasn’t appeared in the series because of an injury. “He’s battling kind of an oblique or side issue, so we’ll hold him out of this series and get him evaluated when we get back home,” Ausmus said.
• Justin Upton was held out of Sunday's lineup because of tightness in his calf. He had been playing though the ailment, but Ausmus said he didn’t want Upton playing on a wet field.
• Right-hander Cam Bedrosian (right forearm strain) began playing catch on Sunday. “The soreness is out of his elbow,” Ausmus said.
