HOUSTON -- Mike Trout underwent surgery Friday in Southern California to have a neuroma removed from his right foot. He will be in a walking sandal for about two weeks until stitches are removed.

“I texted with him,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. “He feels good. He sent me a nice picture of the thing they removed from his foot, and it looked larger than I thought it was going to be.”

Trout’s season ended on Sept. 7 when the pain in the foot become too much to tolerate. One less invasive procedure did not relieve the pain, so he opted for surgery.

“That’s about it,” Ausmus said. “There’s not really a rehab from it. He has to keep it in this walking sandal mainly because of the stitches. Once the stitches come out, the sandal comes off, and he can walk around as tolerated.”

Trout played 134 games and is the favorite to win his third American League Most Valuable Player Award. His eighth season was his best, including a career-high 45 home runs.

He leads the AL in a long list of offensive categories, including home runs, walks (110), intentional walks (14), on-base percentage (.438) and OPS (1.083).

He made the AL All-Star Team for the eighth time, and at 28, he’s up to 57th on the all-time bWAR list for position players at 72.5. He passed Derek Jeter this season and could pass Reggie Jackson and a long list of other Hall of Famers next season.

Injury updates

• Outfielder Justin Upton received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right knee Friday. Ausmus said he would be on crutches “two to three weeks.”

• Catcher Max Stassi, sidelined by an oblique injury, saw a specialist in Nashville on Friday. “Hopefully, we’ll have more information on him by tomorrow,” Ausmus said.

• DH/pitcher Shohei Ohtani will be on crutches another 10 days or so after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

• Infielder Tommy La Stella, recovering from a right tibia fracture, is back doing baseball drills, but it’s not known if he’ll play again this season. “He’s continuing to do baseball work,” Ausmus said. “He’s doing his recovery rehab exercises, and I’m really just waiting for word from the medical team that he’s either able to play or not going to play the rest of the year. He’s taking batting practice.”
