ANAHEIM -- Angels superstar Mike Trout said Monday that he’s making good progress with his strained right calf but won’t have a timeline for his return until he begins jogging.

Trout, who has been out since May 17, has yet to start baseball activities but has been pleased with his overall progress. He had his walking boot removed a week ago and has been receiving treatment at Angel Stadium multiple times a day. He’s on track to return at some point in July, but it’s still too early to know if he’ll be back before or after the All-Star break that begins on July 12. He said he progressed well for the first week and a half before plateauing a bit, but now it’s getting better again.

"Today was probably my best day yet, as far as tolerance-wise," Trout said. "As far as activities, I'm doing as much as I can to strengthen around the calf muscle. I don't have an exact date but I want to start jogging soon if my body allows me do it. Every day I come in, I'm walking on the treadmill but not with any intensity yet. But I'm just very happy with my progress so far."

Trout arrives early to the ballpark each day for treatment and is able to watch the first few innings of the game from the dugout before he goes back in for even more treatment. Trout has never enjoyed being on the bench and not being able to contribute, so he tries to find other ways to help his teammates, including breaking down opposing pitchers and their tendencies.

“It's tough being on the bench,” Trout said. “There's only so much you can do and you want to be out there. But I'm in there for the meetings, talking about pitchers. I like being engaged in the meetings and telling guys what I saw the last time I faced them. It's a grind sometimes because every day you see the guys go out there, you want to be out there. It's frustrating not being out there, but just trying to do the most I can to help the team win from the bench."

Ohtani’s next start to come Friday

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani will stay on schedule as part of the club’s six-man rotation and his next start will come on Friday against the D-backs in Arizona after an off-day on Thursday. It’s an Interleague game, so the Angels won’t have to forgo the designated hitter to get him in the lineup. But he’s expected to bat in the two-hole, which has been his normal spot in the order this season.

Ohtani is coming off a strong outing against the Mariners on Friday that saw him strike out 10 without issuing a walk. He gave up two runs over six innings but only threw 76 pitches in the win. He's 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in eight starts this season with 60 strikeouts, 26 walks and four homers allowed in 42 1/3 innings.

"He has so much control of his emotions and he never gets flustered," Angels manager Joe Maddon said. "He knows where his fastball is going. He's repeating his motion with good tempo. Last year, he was slow, slow, slow and then quick and he was jerking stuff. He has a much better line to home plate right now. And then breaking stuff, my god, and he's able to locate that it."

Marsh lands on Minor League injured list

Outfielder Brandon Marsh, ranked as the club’s No. 1 prospect by MLB Pipeline, was placed on the Minor League injured list with Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, as he’s been dealing with right shoulder inflammation. It’s not considered serious, although Marsh did head to Southern California to have his shoulder examined.

Marsh, 23, has struggled offensively at Triple-A, hitting .183/.338/.317 with a homer, three doubles, a triple and two RBIs in 16 games. He's dealt with a shoulder labrum injury since last season and also missed time in Spring Training with the injury.

Adell playing center field in Minors

Former top outfielder prospect Jo Adell has been playing center field at Triple-A Salt Lake more recently, moving away from the corner-outfield spots he usually plays. He made his third straight start in center on Monday.

Adell leads the Minor Leagues with 15 homers and it could be an indication the Angels are getting him ready for a callup to the Majors soon. Adell could replace Juan Lagares in center until Trout is ready to return.
