CHICAGO -- Though the Braves are hopeful Mike Soroka will make a start this weekend against the Mets, they understand it might be wise to give him an additional day or two to recover from the right forearm bruise that developed after he was hit by a pitch Sunday against the Nationals.

“You feel good about it and all of that, but until he launches a ball, we’re not going to know for sure,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.

Soroka was not wearing a compression sleeve or any sort of protective padding as he walked through the visitors' clubhouse Monday at Wrigley Field. The swelling in his forearm significantly subsided overnight. But the rookie hurler’s schedule for the remainder of the week will not be set until he begins throwing again Tuesday.

“When I talked to him, he said he felt like he had just done a really extensive forearm workout,” Snitker said. “I think we’ll know a little more tomorrow. I kind of figured tomorrow would be a day he’d go out and play long toss or something like that to see where he’s at, because I don’t know if we know.”

Soroka is tentatively scheduled to take his next turn Friday in the series opener against the Mets at Citi Field. But even if he throws without discomfort Tuesday, the Braves might choose to have him wait until Thursday to throw a side session. This would create the possibility his start would be pushed back to Saturday or Sunday.

Soroka avoided a significant injury when he was hit by Austin Voth’s 93.3 mph fastball, but the Braves certainly do not want to take any chances with the 21-year-old hurler, who ranks second in the Majors with a 2.07 ERA.

If the Braves choose to push Soroka back a day or two, they could give the Friday start to left-hander Kolby Allard, who has a 2.00 ERA over his past four starts for Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves have not revealed who will start in place of the recently demoted Mike Foltynewicz on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The most likely candidate is Bryse Wilson, who has a 2.49 ERA over his past eight starts for Gwinnett.

Newcomb set to return

Snitker said the plan remains to activate Sean Newcomb from the seven-day concussion injured list before Tuesday’s game against the Cubs. Newcomb did not experience any problems during or after a rehab appearance Saturday for Gwinnett. The lefty reliever recorded five strikeouts over two innings. It was the first time he pitched since he was hit in the back of the head by a line drive off the bat of Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto on June 15.

When Newcomb returns, he could replace either Chad Sobotka or Kyle Wright, who was recalled on Monday when Grant Dayton was optioned to Gwinnett. Wright’s arrival will provide depth as the Braves compensate for Josh Tomlin working four innings Sunday after Soroka exited.
