Shildt's mother, Lib, passes away at 85
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has been around baseball since he was a kid, when his mother, Lib, brought him along to her job with the Charlotte O’s, then the Double-A affiliate of the Orioles.
Mike performed odd jobs around the clubhouse and decided he wanted to work in baseball. He was a scout, a coach and a manager in the Cardinals’ system before coaching and now managing in the Majors. Through it all, his mother was always his biggest supporter. He often mentioned the advice she gave him and how he applied it to his life and his job.
Elizabeth "Lib" Shildt died late last week in Charlotte, N.C. She was 85.
The Cardinals sent the following statement:
"The St. Louis Cardinals organization offers its condolences to manager Mike Shildt and his family following the recent passing of Mike's mother, Elizabeth 'Lib' Shildt."
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, services will be at 1 p.m. on Nov. 18 in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Baseball for Life, a non-profit, Charlotte-based organization of which Shildt is co-director.
