12-year MLB veteran was Mets' first-round selection in 2005 Draft
Veteran right-hander Mike Pelfrey has decided to retire from professional baseball to become a coach at Newman University, according to a report by SB Nation on Wednesday.
The 12-year Major Leaguer was a first-round selection out of Wichita State University by the Mets in 2005, and he went on to go 50-54 with a 4.36 ERA in 896 1/3 innings over seven seasons with New York.
While Pelfrey will take over as the coach for the Division II school in Wichita, Kan., he is also expected to return to Wichita State to finish his degree, according to the report.
Pelfrey also pitched for the Twins, Tigers and White Sox during his time in the big leagues. He spent three seasons with Minnesota, going 5-13 in 2013 and 6-11 in 2015. The 34-year-old pitched for the White Sox last season, going 3-12 while making 21 starts.
Pelfrey was 68-103 with a 4.68 ERA in 275 games (256 starts) over the course of his career.
