Clev starts G1 of NLDS; Lamet left off roster

October 6th, 2020

Mike Clevinger is back, and the Padres are wasting no time shuffling their ace back into the deck. He will start Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Dodgers on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

Clevinger, who hasn't pitched in 13 days because of a right-elbow impingement, missed the team's NL Wild Card Series against the Cardinals. But he threw an intensive bullpen session Sunday and reported no ill effects.

"It's been a shot of energy," Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. "Excited to get him back out there."

Fellow right-hander Dinelson Lamet was left off the NLDS roster. But the Padres are optimistic about his status should they advance past the Dodgers. Lamet has been playing catch as he works his way back from a right biceps injury, but he’s yet to throw a bullpen session.

“Really, it’s a day-to-day thing,” Padres general manager A.J. Preller said. “He’s got the green light to go out there, throwing program. … We just didn’t get to that point over the last few days that we felt like he was full-go and ready to be part of this roster.”

Nonetheless, Clevinger's return provides a major boost for a rotation that could use one. San Diego got just six innings from its starting pitchers across three games against St. Louis. That formula won't hold up in a five-game NLDS against the Dodgers -- a much better offense.

And that's where Clevinger comes in. Acquired in a nine-player Trade Deadline blockbuster, he posted a 2.84 ERA with one strikeout per inning across four starts with San Diego. The Padres are hopeful he can give the rest of their pitching staff some breathing room, with the possibility of five games in five days.

“He came in and just fit right in with this club,” Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer said. “To see the work he’s been putting in the last couple weeks, even the last couple days here, just to get healthy for us, it means a lot as a teammate.”

Clevinger has never faced the Dodgers, and the Padres even altered their rotation in mid-September -- perhaps to avoid giving the Dodgers a preview or perhaps to line him up for Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. But he sustained his injury shortly thereafter.

The Padres have yet to announce the rest of their NLDS rotation. But Chris Paddack and Zach Davies, who started Games 1 and 2 against the Cardinals, are expected to pitch. The Padres might also employ another bullpen day -- which they used to much success in Game 3 against St. Louis.

In another surprise addition to the roster, the Padres added left-hander Ryan Weathers, who has never pitched above Class A. Weathers, the team’s No. 6 prospect, will join the bullpen.

Outfielder Greg Allen was also added as a defensive specialist. To make room, right-hander Dan Altavilla and infielders Greg Garcia and Jorge Mateo were not added after being named to the Wild Card Series roster. Garcia was the most surprising omission. But without any obvious pinch-hit at-bats available, the Padres felt it was more important to add an extra arm.
