Cabrera, Castellanos rep Tigers on ASG ballot

BALTIMORE -- is back on the All-Star ballot hoping for his 12th selection to the Midsummer Classic, and his first since 2016. is on the ballot hoping for vindication after being left off from last year’s American League roster. This time, they’ll be part of a new balloting process.

Voting for this year’s All-Star Game began Tuesday with the release of the ballot. Other Tigers up for consideration include outfielders JaCoby Jones and Christin Stewart, catcher Grayson Greiner, second baseman Josh Harrison, shortstop Jordy Mercer, third baseman Jeimer Candelario and designated hitter Niko Goodrum.

All of them are part of what is called “The Primary” process, in which fans can vote on MLB.com, on the MLB At-Bat and Ballpark mobile apps and on Google search in the U.S. and Canada until 4 p.m. ET on Friday, June 21. The top three vote-getters at each position and the top nine outfielders will move on to “The Starters Election” beginning at noon on Wednesday, June 26 and running until 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 27.

Cabrera entered Tuesday batting .295 with eight doubles, two home runs, 21 RBIs and a .742 OPS. Castellanos came into Tuesday batting .274 with 17 doubles, second-most among AL hitters, along with three triples, five homers, 19 RBIs and a .781 OPS.

Cabrera has been elected to three All-Star starting spots in his career, most recently in 2014. Castellanos, meanwhile, has never been an All-Star, despite being one of the strongest candidates on the club last year. With the AL All-Star outfield picture packed, reliever Joe Jimenez earned last year’s nod as the Tigers' lone representative.

The top three vote-getters at each position (including nine outfielders) per league will move on to "The Starters Election," which begins at noon ET on Wednesday, June 26. The votes will reset for a 28-hour voting window that ends at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 27. Starters for the 2019 Midsummer Classic will be unveiled on ESPN that night at 7 ET. The pitchers and reserves will be announced on Sunday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Then on Tuesday, July 9, during the 2019 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, fans may visit MLB.com and the 30 club sites to submit their choices for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet.

The 90th Midsummer Classic, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 180 countries. FOX Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage in the United States, while ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage.
