Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday as he continues to deal with a right shoulder strain. The move was made, in part, because the club needed a 40-man roster spot to claim left-handed pitcher and Cincinnati native Phillip Diehl from the Rockies.

Lorenzen, who came into the season hoping to join the starting rotation, suffered what was initially termed as a slight strain in his shoulder during the middle portion of Spring Training. He opened the season on the 10-day IL with the hope that he wouldn’t miss much time.

But at some point, there was a setback. After Lorenzen was seen by team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek, he went for a second opinion.

On Tuesday, Lorenzen received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his shoulder and is scheduled to receive another one in two weeks. The Reds are hopeful that he could return in June when his 60 days are completed.

Diehl, 26, has an 8.78 ERA in 16 relief appearances with the Rockies over parts of the 2019 and ’20 seasons.

A graduate of Archbishop Moeller High School, Diehl was a 27th-round pick by the Yankees in the 2016 Draft. He was traded to Colorado during Spring Training in '19 for outfielder Mike Tauchman. Diehl was optioned to the Reds' alternate training site.
