PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets parted ways with veteran pitcher Buddy Carlyle on Friday, releasing him in their latest wave of cuts. The team also reassigned outfielder Roger Bernadina and infielders Danny Muno, T.J. Rivera and Ty Kelly to Minor League camp.
Carlyle, 38, signed a Minor League deal with the Mets this past offseason after posting a 5.63 ERA for them in 11 appearances last season. Forever the answer of a trivia question, Carlyle earned the save last season on Opening Day in Washington after Jenrry Mejia was unable to pitch due to injury. He began the year with four consecutive scoreless appearances, but he was out of the big leagues by mid-May. Carlyle posted an 8.10 ERA in seven games this spring.

The right-hander's winding career path began in 1999 with the Padres, and it included a return to the big leagues in 2014 with the Mets following a three-year hiatus. He was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in '09.
Bernadina, another big league veteran, will open the season as a Minor League depth option at Triple-A Las Vegas. A career .236 hitter over seven seasons with the Nationals, Phillies, Reds and Dodgers, Bernadina most recently played in the big leagues in 2014.
Muno, Rivera and Kelly should all open the year at Las Vegas.
The cuts leave the Mets with 32 players left in big league camp, including Zack Wheeler and Josh Edgin, who are ticketed for the disabled list.
