Warthen apologizes for insensitive remarks

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen on Wednesday apologized for "insensitive remarks" he recently made in the clubhouse that were printed in the Wall Street Journal.

"I apologize for the thoughtless remarks that I made yesterday in the clubhouse," Warthen said of his exchange with Jeff Cutler, the interpreter for Daisuke Matsuzaka. "They were a poor attempt at humor but were wrong and inappropriate in any setting. I am very sorry."

Cutler said in the Journal story that he was not offended by Warthen's remarks, which had to do with Cutler's race.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I apologize for the insensitive remarks made by of one of our staff members," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said in a statement. "The remarks were offensive and inappropriate and the organization is very sorry."
