Phillies take 3 of 4 in ‘home and home’ series
The Phillies and Mets played a “home and home” series, with the first two games at Citi Field and the final two at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia won the series opener on Monday thanks to a late rally to force extra innings. Bryson Stott was the hero, launching a home run in the ninth and a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th to lift the Phils, 5-4.
Game 2 of the series was dominated by Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola, who was masterful in a four-hit shutout of the Mets on Tuesday. He didn’t walk a batter and he struck out eight in the 4-0 victory. Alec Bohm went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two.
It was more of the same when the scene shifted to Philadelphia on Wednesday for the third game, with the Phillies winning in comfortable fashion, 10-5. Bryce Harper, as he so often has been at Citizens Bank Park, was the hero in this contest, launching his 10th home run of the season and finishing a triple shy of the cycle with three RBIs.
The Mets salvaged a game in the series with a 6-5, 11-inning win in Thursday’s finale. It was a sloppy game in which errors and wild pitches were the order of the day. But New York outlasted Philadelphia thanks to a clutch go-ahead RBI single by J.D. Martinez in the top of the 11th, followed by a wild pitch by Phillies reliever José Alvarado that enabled the Mets to score their 6th run.
The 2024 Mets
The Mets have been a very streaky team so far in 2024. They opened the season 0-5, and then reeled off 12 wins over their next 15 games. Since then, New York is 8-15.
At the plate, the Mets have struggled -- entering Friday, their offense ranked 19th in the Majors with 183 runs scored. Among the regular starters, only Martinez (.789), Pete Alonso (.771) and Brandon Nimmo (.757) have an OPS north of .700. Francisco Lindor, in particular, has been scuffling -- he went hitless in 16 at-bats over the four games against the Phillies, falling below the Mendoza Line to a batting average of .191 on the season.
On the mound, it’s been a mixed bag with some injuries sprinkled in for the Mets. Luis Severino has been good so far in his first season in Queens, posting an even 3.00 ERA through his first eight starts. Sean Manaea has also been strong, with a 3.05 ERA over eight starts of his own.
The club recently optioned right-hander José Buttó to Triple-A Syracuse due to his high walk rate, though overall, the results have been good -- in eight starts, he pitched to a 3.08 ERA. Right-hander Tylor Megill exited his first start of the season with a right shoulder strain, but he is expected to be activated from the injured list soon, which could provide a lift for the rotation.
The bullpen has been an area of strength for the Mets, but star closer Edwin Díaz has sparked concern after blowing three of his last four save opportunities.
The 2024 Phillies
The Phillies have been the hottest team in baseball over the past month. Since April 15, when they were 8-8 on the season, they’ve won 23 of 29 games.
Harper, as you’d expect, is leading the way for the lineup with a .908 OPS and 10 homers. But Bohm, who is having a breakout season so far, and Stott have been Harper's wingmen -- Bohm is hitting .333/.400/.521 with 36 RBIs, and Stott owns an .842 OPS with 28 runs driven in.
That trio has stepped up in the absence of star shortstop Trea Turner, who will probably be sidelined for about six weeks with a strained left hamstring. Kyle Schwarber has launched nine homers, though only one of them has come in May. On the plus side, he’s hitting .277 this month, more than 50 points higher than his season average. Nick Castellanos has struggled in the early going -- after going 0-for-4 on Thursday, he’s hitting .201 with a .571 OPS.
The starting rotation has been superb. With his gem against the Mets last time out, Nola lowered his season ERA to 3.10 over nine starts. Fellow star right-hander Zack Wheeler has been doing his thing, posting a 2.53 ERA over his first nine starts. The best of the bunch, however, has been left-hander Ranger Suárez, who has a 1.37 ERA and 0.76 WHIP in nine starts.
Alvarado, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm have been strong out of the bullpen gate for Philadelphia, but Seranthony Domínguez and Gregory Soto have had their struggles, each with an ERA north of 6.
