JUPITER, Fla. -- In a battle of Top 100 prospects at Minor League camp, Marlins right-hander Max Meyer proved he could make big pitches in big spots when he doesn't have his best stuff.
Scheduled to throw four innings or 50 pitches, Meyer (No. 30) struck out four and walked one in three scoreless frames on Thursday on a back field at the Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium complex. But he didn't record a clean inning, even needing to escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam with a strikeout and a double play in the second.
"I wasn't extending as much as I should have, but I got some big outs when there were runners on," said Meyer, whose fastball sat in the 95-98 mph range. "I'm just going to be working on my fastball command and really get that dialed in."
Meyer dueled Nationals right-hander Cade Cavalli (No. 39), his teammate on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2019. Both reached the Triple-A level for their organizations in '21 and have aspirations of making their MLB debuts in '22.
"Premium arm, he's a really good pitcher, and I like our hitters getting reps off that," Meyer said. "Just the competition level I feel like goes up when you face those good arms, and it felt like a real game today. My adrenaline was going a little bit. So it was fun."
Meyer, who turns 23 on Saturday, threw his changeup a handful of times -- though he had wanted to use it more. According to MLB Pipeline's scouting report, his plus fastball and slider grade out at 65 on a scale of 20-80; his changeup is 55. That third offering would take him to another level.
"It felt good when I was able to stay on top of it," Meyer said. "I know it's going to be a really good pitch for me this year, and I feel really comfortable throwing it."
