Kepler day to day after fouling ball off foot
One of Max Kepler’s swings hurt the Indians. Another hurt himself.
Kepler hit a leadoff home run in the first inning to rudely welcome Mike Clevinger back to the big leagues. But Kepler had to leave Wednesday’s eventual 6-3 loss at Progressive Field an inning later after fouling a ball off his right foot. He suffered a bruise and is considered day to day, the club announced.
“Max is doing all right,” manager Rocco Baldelli said after the game. “We got an X-ray done, it came back negative. ... I think we’re going to know a lot more [Thursday] about how he’s feeling.”
The foul ball was the last pitch of the top of the second inning, as LaMonte Wade was then picked off at first base to end the inning. In the bottom of the second, Jake Cave replaced Wade in center field, with Wade shifting to right to fill Kepler’s position.
The home run was Kepler’s seventh of the season and his third leadoff dinger.
