Tuiasosopo tabbed to replace Washington as third-base coach

Braves hire Goodwin, Abreu to handle first-base and bullpen coach duties

December 11th, 2023

ATLANTA -- There is no replacing Ron Washington. But Matt Tuiasosopo has earned the chance to fill the role previously held by the beloved former Braves coach.

The Braves filled each of the three vacancies on their coaching staff on Monday afternoon. Tuiasosopo will serve as the third-base coach and Tom Goodwin will be the new first-base coach. Erick Abreu comes from the Astros to become Atlanta’s new bullpen coach.

When Washington was named the Angels manager last month, he took former Atlanta first-base coach Eric Young Sr. with him. The bullpen coach role opened two weeks ago, when Drew French left the Braves to become the Orioles’ pitching coach.

Tuiasosopo played very briefly for Atlanta in 2016 and then spent all of the '17 season playing for Triple-A Gwinnett. He began his coaching career within Atlanta’s system in '19, when he served as High-A Rome’s manager. His stock has steadily risen since he became Gwinnett’s manager at the start of the '21 season.

When Washington was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame at the end of July, Tuiasosopo served as the Braves’ third-base coach for a few days.

Goodwin has previously served as a first-base coach for the Mets (2012-17) and Red Sox (2018-21). The former outfielder has served as a roving instructor for the Braves the past two seasons. A prominent former Braves player showered Goodwin with praise when he learned he was a candidate for the job.

French proved to be a great addition when he came from the Astros to join the Braves before the 2021 season. Abreu will attempt to follow a similar path. The 40-year-old pitched in Houston’s organization from 2008-12. He has spent the past nine seasons as a pitching coach within the Astros’ Minor League system.
