Olson homers twice, including a slam, to help Braves snap skid

DENVER -- Time will tell if this was the night the Braves turned things around. But in the midst of Matt Olson’s second multi-homer game of the season, the team was reminded of how valuable the first baseman could be during its late-season push.

Olson’s towering grand slam in the third inning wasn’t enough. But his two-run homer in the seventh allowed the Braves to end a six-game losing streak with an 11-8 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.

Releasing frustrations during this slugfest might have been just what the Braves needed. Olson set a career high with six RBIs and Marcell Ozuna homered for the third straight day. Jorge Soler homered in a second straight game and tallied a key two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the seventh.

Nothing has come easy for the Braves, who won for just the eighth time in 21 games since the All-Star break. But if the Mets lose to the Mariners on Saturday night, Atlanta will still regain the lead in the battle for the third National League Wild Card spot.

Olson’s big night helped Max Fried, who retired just three of the first nine batters he faced. He hung a curveball that former Braves teammate Sam Hilliard drilled for a three-run homer in the second. Hilliard drove in two more runs in the third, when he blooped a double into shallow center field. Ramon Laureano may have gotten to the ball had he not been dealing with a sore right heel.
