Trio to vie for time in Jazz's absence
WASHINGTON -- With Jazz Chisholm Jr. sidelined, the Marlins will mix and match three players -- Isan Díaz, Joe Panik and Jon Berti -- at second and third base until Brian Anderson is activated from the injured list. Anderson is eligible to return on Sunday in the series finale against the Padres at loanDepot park. From that point on, that trio will vie for playing time at second.
Díaz started at the hot corner and Panik at second on Tuesday, with the former making a slick run-saving play to end the fifth inning in the Marlins' 6-3 loss to the Nationals at Nationals Park. Both are left-handed batters, and the Nats sent righty Paolo Espino to open a bullpen game. Manager Don Mattingly previously has said Díaz, a natural second baseman, looks comfortable at third. Berti had gotten the bulk of the work there in Anderson's absence until Panik joined the club and it became more of a platoon.
Campbell back in action
Rule 5 Draft pick Paul Campbell went four scoreless innings to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday night. He permitted one hit, walked four and struck out three on 70 pitches. The right-hander was suspended for 80 games on May 3 after testing positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), a performance-enhancing substance in violation of MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Miami had hoped Campbell would provide starting depth, though he was used as a swingman through five Major League outings (one start). He had permitted 14 runs (11 earned) on 19 hits in 11 1/3 innings.
