What to know about Marlins Spring Training
MIAMI -- The wait is nearly over.
Next week, the Marlins will open Spring Training to prepare for the 2023 season. There will be plenty of new faces on the diamond and in the dugout. Here is a helpful FAQ to keep handy over the next six weeks.
When is the first workout for pitchers and catchers?
• Feb. 13 is the first workout for pitchers and catchers slated to participate in the World Baseball Classic.
• Feb. 16 is the first workout for all pitchers and catchers, and voluntary for World Baseball Classic position players.
What is the date of the first full-squad workout?
Feb. 21
Where is the team’s facility?
Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., about 83 miles north of loanDepot park.
Can fans attend workouts?
Yes, beginning on Feb. 16.
Who are some new faces fans should know?
Jean Segura and Luis Arraez will be the starting third baseman and second baseman, respectively. Segura is fresh off a Fall Classic appearance with the Phillies, while Arraez won the 2022 American League batting crown.
After several injury-plagued seasons, right-hander Johnny Cueto rebounded in '22. A 15-year MLB veteran who is a two-time All-Star and a World Series champion, he could slot behind ace Sandy Alcantara in the rotation.
Then there's high-leverage reliever Matt Barnes, who played a pivotal part in the Red Sox's '18 World Series title run and was named an All-Star closer in '21. Barnes has struggled off and on since, but he is a bounceback candidate.
Who are some of the top prospects invited to Major League camp?
Right-hander Eury Pérez (No. 1), third baseman Jacob Berry (No. 3) and left-hander Dax Fulton (No. 7) will attend big league camp for the first time. In 2022, Pérez and Fulton reached Double-A, while Berry played 33 games at Single-A Jupiter after being selected sixth overall in the MLB Draft.
Another name to monitor is No. 10 prospect Sixto Sánchez, who hasn't pitched in a game at any level since spring '21 due to lingering shoulder trouble.
Which players will be participating in the World Baseball Classic?
The rosters have yet to be announced, but it is expected Alcantara (Dominican Republic) will be among a handful of Marlins to compete. The tournament runs from March 8-21.
