MIAMI -- The Marlins are starting to settle their shortstop situation. Prospect J.T. Riddle, who bruised the tip of his right index finger on Wednesday, is avoiding a disabled list stint and should be ready to return to the lineup on Saturday.
For depth, Miami on Friday selected the contract of veteran Mike Aviles from Triple-A New Orleans and optioned catcher Tomas Telis to New Orleans. Aviles came in as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and was hit by a pitch. He remained in the game to play the final two innings at shortstop in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Braves.
To make space on the 40-man roster for Aviles, the Marlins designated for assignment Double-A Jacksonville outfielder Yefri Perez. Right-hander Joe Gunkel also cleared waivers and was outrighted to Jacksonville.
The transactions give the Marlins some stability at shortstop, a position ravaged by injuries this week when Miguel Rojas (fractured right thumb) and Adeiny Hechavarria (left oblique strain) went on the DL.
Rojas, on the 60-day DL, underwent surgery on Friday and is in a cast. He will miss at least two months. Hechavarria is expected to be out more than two weeks.
Due to the injuries, the Marlins reshuffled their infield in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Cardinals. Dee Gordon played shortstop for the first time since 2013 during his early years with the Dodgers. Gordon was the National League's Gold Glove Award-winning second baseman in '15.
"We'd want to get back to everybody is in their normal spots," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "Dee did a good job the other day, but again, he obviously played Gold Glove second base. We want to get him back to where we think he's best."

Riddle, ranked as the organization's No. 12 prospect, avoided a more serious ailment when he had a ball deflect off his finger during early fielding drills on Wednesday.
"Most of the concern for me was, was it broke?" Riddle said. "When I first did it and it swelled up so fast ... I'm just glad it's not broken."
Aviles, 36, recently signed a Minor League deal with the Marlins, and he recorded two at-bats while playing third base for New Orleans on Thursday.
A nine-year Major League veteran, Aviles broke in with the Royals in 2008, also playing for the Red Sox and Indians before appearing in 68 games with the Tigers last year.
Aviles, who played in the World Baseball Classic for Team Puerto Rico, has a career slash line of .262/.295/.378.
