Marlins place Ogando on DL with broken rib
Club recalls No. 21 prospect Wittgren from Triple-A
MIAMI -- Marlins reliever Nefi Ogando, who was involved in a collision on Sunday while covering first base, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a fractured rib on his right side. Right-hander Nick Wittgren, the club's No. 21 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, was called up from Triple-A New Orleans.
Ogando had a 3.00 ERA in three big league appearances, while Wittgren allowed one run in two innings over two relief outings in his first stint with the Marlins this season.
The Marlins initially were hopeful Ogando was just dealing with a bruise, because initial X-rays were inconclusive. The injury occurred in the seventh inning of Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Phillies, as Cesar Hernandez bounced a grounder that drew first baseman Justin Bour toward second base. Ogando retrieved the throw from Bour, but it led him into the runner. The two collided, and the right-hander fell to the ground.
Ogando remained in the game and got out of the inning when Maikel Franco tapped to shortstop.
"It was one of the things we were worried about," manager Don Mattingly said. "He came in sore. We were hoping it was just a bruise. It ended up being a fracture. I don't know the time table. I don't think it is six weeks or anything, but I know it is at least two."
Ogando said one rib was fractured, and the club is hopeful he will miss just a couple of weeks. Recalled on May 3 from New Orleans, the right-hander is a hard-thrower who provides late-innings depth for the Marlins.
Wittgren is a candidate to throw multiple innings out of the bullpen. He made his big league debut on April 19 vs. Washington, and he was optioned to New Orleans on April 27, when Justin Nicolino was recalled to join the rotation.
Worth noting
Reliever Mike Dunn, who has been on the disabled list with a left forearm strain since the season started, threw a 15-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday. Dunn is next scheduled to throw off the mound on Friday, and he hopes to be activated in either late May or early June.
