MIAMI -- The Marlins acquired infielder Nick Noonan from the Brewers on Thursday for cash considerations in a Minor League trade. The 28-year-old is expected to report to Triple-A New Orleans, and he provides organization depth with big league experience.
A first-round Draft pick of the Giants in 2007, Noonan has appeared in 83 big league games, including seven with the Padres last year.
The Marlins have been hit hard by injuries at shortstop this week, placing Miguel Rojas (fractured right thumb) on the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Adeiny Hechavarria (left oblique strain) was put on the 10-day DL, and he will need at least two weeks.
Miami also is weighing the status of J.T. Riddle, who bruised the tip of his right index finger on Wednesday. An X-ray came back negative, but Riddle is still expected to miss three to five days.
If the Marlins feel that will leave them too shorthanded at shortstop, Riddle could go on the DL, which could create an opening for Noonan to get a big league callup.
The Marlins also are still considering other shortstop candidates who could be on the market.
Gold Glove Award-winning second baseman Dee Gordon started at shortstop for Miami on Wednesday in a 7-5 loss to the Cardinals. It was his first time at shortstop since 2013.
Noonan, a left-handed hitter, was hitting .212 in 10 games in the Brewers' system before being dealt to the Marlins.
