PEORIA, Ariz. -- Outfielder Stefen Romero's initial foray to first base this spring resulted in a deep bone bruise on his right knee that will sideline him for the next few days, Mariners manager Scott Servais said Friday.
Romero took a hard line drive by Jon Jay of the Padres off his leg just three batters after he'd shifted from right field to first base in Thursday's 6-5 win. The ball ricocheted straight to shortstop Tyler Smith, who stepped on the second-base bag and fired back to Romero at first for a double play.

Mariners first-base coach Casey Candaele termed the play a "knee-6-3" double play, but Romero had to leave the game and now will be sidelined several days after going 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk in his first two Cactus League outings.
Servais said the 27-year-old would undergo treatment on Friday and see how the knee feels on Saturday.
"That ball was hit pretty hard and had a little hook on it," Servais said. "He's been playing great. Stefen has really swung the bat well, so I'm anxious to get him back out there."

• Korean first baseman Dae-Ho Lee has rejoined the team after getting his work visa cleared up, and will likely make his first Cactus League appearance in Saturday's game against the Angels in Peoria.
• Nelson Cruz will get his first game action Saturday, starting at designated hitter against the Angels, after being slowed by a sore knee early in camp. Servais said Cruz will DH every other day initially and won't get any time in the outfield for five or six more days.
• The Mariners are going slowly with left-hander Danny Hultzen after his lengthy battle with shoulder issues. Servais said Hultzen won't throw in a game until sometime next week and is getting extra rest between his bullpen and batting practice sessions.
"He's playing catch every day and doing his thing," Servais said. "We're just trying to spread it out. It's about how you finish this marathon with him, not how you start it. He's looked very good. I'm excited about it. He's got stuff, there's no doubt about it."
• Left-hander Mike Montgomery is back throwing after missing several days following the surgical removal of a cyst on his neck. Montgomery said he'll likely throw a bullpen session on Sunday and then work back toward game situations.
