SEATTLE -- The Mariners outrighted the contract of pitcher Cody Martin to Triple-A Tacoma after the 27-year-old right-hander cleared waivers on Friday.
Martin had been designated for assignment on Wednesday to open a 40-man roster spot after the Mariners acquired pitchers Drew Smyly and Shae Simmons in trades. The 40-man roster is now full.
The Mariners were able to retain Martin after he went 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine appearances, including two spot starts, last year for the Major League club. The former Gonzaga University hurler also went 10-7 with a 3.62 ERA in 25 games (20 starts) with Tacoma.
Martin was acquired last offseason in a waiver claim from the A's. Over parts of two seasons with the A's, Braves and Mariners, he's 3-7 with a 6.07 ERA in 34 games, including four starts. Martin was a seventh-round pick by the Braves in the 2011 Draft.
