SEATTLE - A Mariners pitching staff already dealing with an abundance of injuries got hit with two more during Friday's 3-1, 13-inning loss to the Rangers when relievers Jean Machi and Evan Marshall both had to be taken out of the game in the 11th inning.
Machi, making his third appearance since his promotion from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, got two outs in the inning before a nerve issue in his right thumb brought out the trainers.
In came Marshall from the 'pen, and on his second pitch to Joey Gallo he screamed out in pain and grabbed his right hamstring before falling to the ground beside the mound.
"Machi had a hard time gripping the ball," said manager Scott Servais, who indicated that issue will be day-to-day. "Marshall pulled his hamstring pretty good. Obviously, he went down in pain right away. I felt bad for him. He's probably going to be out a significant amount of time."

Marshall had just been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma before the game. He was replaced by rookie Emilio Pagan, who was making his second Major League appearance since also being promoted Tuesday.
"It wasn't pleasant," said Marshall, who was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game. "I stretched and warmed up, but I felt it right as I let go of the ball."
Seattle learned earlier in the day that starter James Paxton needed to go on the 10-day disabled list with a strained forearm that will likely cause him to miss two or three starts.
Fellow starters Felix Hernandez and Drew Smyly were already on the disabled list and the Mariners are also without relievers Evan Scribner, Shae Simmons and Steve Cishek, while rookie Dan Altavilla is in Tacoma working through some early-season struggles. Those four all were ticketed as late-inning set-up candidates.
