DETROIT -- James Paxton lost his string of no-hit and scoreless innings. The Mariners lost Robinson Cano to a broken bone in his hand after getting hit by a pitch. And Seattle saw its streak of not having lost a road series this season snapped by a 5-4 gut punch by the Tigers on Sunday at Comerica Park.
It wasn't a happy Mother's Day for the Mariners, who went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position on a frustrating afternoon in the Motor City before the Tigers scored the walk-off win with three consecutive singles against reliever Juan Nicasio.
"Pax was maybe not as dominant as the last few times out," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "I thought his stuff was fine, once he started getting into all his pitches. He had enough stuff to give us a chance to win. Offensively we just left a lot of guys on base today. You get chances, you've got to cash in and we didn't get enough big hits today."
An error on Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez in the bottom of the eighth opened the door for the Mariners as he dropped a toss from first baseman John Hicks on a Dee Gordon grounder that would have ended the frame with Detroit leading 4-2.

Instead, Jean Segura followed with a two-run, bases-loaded single that knotted the score at 4. But Andrew Romine -- who replaced Cano after the eight-time All-Star was hit in the third inning -- struck out to end that frame and Seattle was retired in order in the ninth.
JaCoby Jones led off the ninth against Nicasio with a slow-roller single that squeezed between Segura and Kyle Seager, Niko Goodrum followed with a single to right and Iglesias ended it with his base hit through a drawn-in infield.
The setback dropped the Mariners to 22-17 as they head to Minnesota for a makeup game that will end their seven-game road trip. Seattle is 14-9 away from Safeco Field, and 5-1-2 in eight road series.
Paxton, who threw the sixth no-hitter in Mariners history on Tuesday in Toronto, allowed six hits and three runs with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings. The big lefty saw his string of hitless innings end at 11 and scoreless frames snapped at 18 when the Tigers tallied three singles and a pair of runs in the third.

A second-inning solo homer by Seager and an RBI single by Gordon in the fourth had the game tied at 2 before Goodrum, who ended Paxton's hitless streak with a single in the third, pushed Detroit back in front with a leadoff homer in the fifth.

Gordon broke out of an 0-for-12 skid with a 2-for-4 day and Seager has three homers and eight RBIs in his last four games after going deep for the seventh time this season.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
For the Mariners' big picture, nothing mattered more than the sight of Cano walking off the field after getting hit flush in the right hand on a fastball from Blaine Hardy in the third inning. The 35-year-old second baseman will see a hand specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday and could be facing surgery that would surely sideline him for at least 6-8 weeks.

"He's very disappointed," Servais said. "It's an unlucky break. A lot of teams have to deal with things that come up in a season and we'll deal with this one. Everyone understands what Robbie means. He's out there every day. He hits in the three-hole for us. But you've got to be a pro and keep playing."

Ryon Healy went 2-for-4 and scored twice as he continued his hot streak. Since returning from the disabled list on April 26, the 26-year-old first baseman has hit .357 (20-for-56) with seven homers, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored in 16 games.

Veteran lefty Wade LeBlanc starts Monday's 4:10 p.m. PT game in Minneapolis as the Mariners wrap up their seven-game road trip with a makeup game at Target Field from an April 8 weather postponement. LeBlanc has allowed just one run over nine innings in two starts since replacing an injured Erasmo Ramirez. The Twins will counter with right-hander Jake Odorizzi (3-2, 3.83 ERA).
