Mariners add another relief arm, claim Jay off waivers
SEATTLE -- For the second day in a row, the Mariners were back on the waiver wire, claiming left-hander Tyler Jay from the Brewers on Thursday, one day after claiming righty Hagen Danner from the Blue Jays.
The addition of both relievers brought Seattle's 40-man roster to capacity.
Jay, 31, falls into the category of reclamation projects that Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto will often pursue -- former first-round picks.
Jay was selected No. 6 overall by the Twins in 2015, but he didn't reach the Majors until last season with the Mets. Surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome impacted his development, as did a one-year stint away from baseball in 2021.
After making his MLB debut last April, he was outrighted a few days later then designated for assignment in July, which led to him being traded to the Brewers. He finished the year with just five outings between the two clubs then was DFA'd by Milwaukee last week.
In the Minors last season, Jay went 5–1 with three saves and a 3.02 ERA with 12 walks and 49 strikeouts in 36 outings at Triple-A, between Syracuse in the Mets' organization (23 games) and Nashville in the Brewers' system (13 games). The Mariners are banking on upside, as they typically always do with these types of bullpen additions at this time of year.
Jay and Danner will be in the mix for a full-time role when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on Feb. 12.
