SEATTLE -- As expected, the Mariners selected the contract of left-hander Andrew Albers from Triple-A Tacoma to start Tuesday night's game against the Orioles. But the club also recalled right-hander Sam Gaviglio to add another arm to the bullpen on Tuesday.
Right-handed relievers Casey Lawrence and Thyago Vieira were optioned back to Tacoma to open spots on the 25-man roster, while right-hander Christian Bergman was designated for assignment to open a spot for Albers to be added to the 40-man roster.
Albers, a 31-year-old who was acquired from the Braves for cash last Friday, made his first Major League appearance of the season. He went 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA in 26 games, including 17 starts, with Triple-A Gwinnett in the Braves' organization.

Albers is taking the rotation spot of James Paxton, who went on the 10-day disabled list last week with a strained left pectoral muscle and is expected to miss three to four weeks. Albers will be the Mariners' 16th starting pitcher this year, which is the most in a season since the 2006 Royals used 16 in a 62-100 campaign.
Gaviglio, 27, will be making his third stint with Seattle this year. He's 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA in 12 games, including 11 starts, with the Mariners and 3-5 with a 3.70 ERA in 10 starts with Tacoma. He'll be working out of the bullpen for now.
"He gives us length if we need it early," manager Scott Servais said. "He hasn't thrown in 5-6 days and is fresh and ready to go. We've seen what he can do when he's on and throwing the ball great. He had some really good outings for us. He struggled a little at the end before we sent him down, but he's been throwing the ball fine in Triple-A. If there's an opportunity to use him, we won't hesitate."
Lawrence has gone 1-0 with a 5.64 ERA in 13 relief outings over three stints with Seattle this year, and he pitched four innings in Monday's 11-3 loss to the Orioles.
Vieira also pitched an inning Monday, throwing a scoreless 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout in his MLB debut.

It's hard to imagine the adrenaline rush of an MLB debut being further accelerated by a wicked line drive.
"I went up to him after he came out of the game to tell him nice job," Servais said. "His nickname is the Big Sweat because when he's out there, he's dripping. And he comes in and as I'm talking to him, his glasses are fogging up and now I can't see his eyes.
"So I put my hand on his jersey and I swear to God, his heart was punching me in the fist, that's how hard it was pounding. I just said, 'Hey man, great job.' That's a memorable debut and one he won't forget."
Lawrence and Vieira will rejoin Tacoma, while Bergman now must clear waivers if he's going to remain with the organization. The 29-year-old is 4-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 games, including eight starts, with Seattle this season.
"The backend of our 40-man roster has been very fluid and it's had to be with the guys we take off and come back on and stuff like that," Servais said. "I don't know the interest level and needs other teams may have. I do not want to lose him, I don't think anybody here does. But if he does get picked up by somebody else [on their 40-man roster], obviously that's good for him."
