WASHINGTON -- The soreness in Manuel Margot's right calf has not yet subsided, and the Padres center fielder was placed on the disabled list before Saturday's game against the Nationals. In his place, the club recalled outfielder Franchy Cordero.
Margot, a highly touted rookie who is off to a solid start in the big leagues, was in a walking boot on Friday, three days after he sustained the injury while breaking on a fly ball on Tuesday. He played three innings in Wednesday's game against the Mets, before alerting the coaching staff to the injury after legging out a ground ball.
Margot's DL stint is back dated to Thursday, meaning he could return as early as June 6 against Arizona.
"It looks like it's going to be a little bit longer term than we'd like it to be," said Padres manager Andy Green. "... We're trying to minimize the stress on the leg and let him relax [with the boot]. Just simply walking around all day takes its toll on guys' legs, especially calf muscles."
In 47 games this season, Margot is hitting .259/.305/.389 with four homers and five steals, while showcasing his elite defense in center field.
Injury updates
• Left fielder Alex Dickerson, who is recovering from a bulging disk in his back, is running at full speed at the team's Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz. The Padres feel he's about 10 days away from playing games in Arizona, before going on a rehab stint.
• Righty reliever Carter Capps threw a bullpen session Friday and could face hitters early next week. Capps, who is 14 months removed from Tommy John surgery, hasn't faced hitters since he was pulled from his rehab stint earlier this month when he struggled to find his command and his mechanics.
• Left-hander Christian Friedrich threw bullpen sessions on back-to-back days, an important step in his recovery from a pair of strains (to his left lat and his left elbow). He could face hitters soon.
